Joshua Leon is a writer, artist and researcher who works with a multidisciplinary blend of writing, performative gestures, stolen and restituted objects and exhibition making. He is also pursuing a PhD which combines these modes of practice with research into the poetics of lament, authenticity and Jewishness. By working through a combination of private, collaborative and intimate gestures his work attempts to address the lost and the dispossessed, and to consider how a practice can remain transitory, fragile and intimate in all its iterations. In achieving this consideration, he seeks to formulate spaces where reading, performance, hosting and the presentation of objects articulates a series of contingent relations and collaborations to others, from those close to him or those who have passed with whom he feels connected to. This builds out of a production of poetic texts which engage with a personal, philosophical and historical propulsion to consider the question of who do I address? and, who am I responsible for? Which in turn becomes the work of lament. The production of these texts produces an excess, in which objects and behaviours appear and attempt to speak for themselves. He considers this a manner of working that consistently contemplates the periphery and attempts to remain there, and therefore in his practice he addresses the edges of space and works from a position that remains away from the centre, which is predicated by a relation to his personal history as the grandson of Jewish refugees and émigré.
